Black and White

My roots grew in Dektol and hypo. For half my career, I maintained a black-and-white darkroom. I learned to see in tone before I ever truly understood color. And that same sense of light, dark and the gray in between underpins all I do – whether working with film or digital, millions of colors or only shades of a single tone.

  • 1993. Faneul Hall in Boston hosted some of the key patriot gatherings that led to the United States. I found this scene in the main staircase while touring Boston with a friend who lives there. I pressed myself against the wall to fill my wide-angle frame with the scene reminiscent of an M.C. Escher print. (B060593)

Mundy, Jr. (right) and National Press Photographers Association president Joe Traver, turns from placing a wreath honoring all photographers killed in combat at the base of the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in 1995. The statue in Arlington, Va., is based on Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of World War II soldiers raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.
