A 23-inch spot-tail bass (aka red drum or redfish) lies exhausted in the lap of a kayaker after a long fight in the shallows of the May River. Fishing remains great in the river, despite increased traffic and hints of pollution. Most local seafood and game fish breed in the May River, although researchers have yet to confirm whether the prized spottails are among them.
