  • Great egrets scuffle over a fishing spot among tidal pools left at low tide on a May River sand bar. Hunted nearly to extinction for their feathers in the late 19th Century, egrets are now protected with other wading birds and have made a strong comeback, especially in the May River, where they are common year-round.

  • Atlantic bottlenose dolphins strand feed in a marsh creek of the May River, herding fish up on the mud bank, following them, eating them and then rolling back into the water. This learned behavior is unique to the Carolina and Georgia coasts. Scientists say some 500 dolphins are resident in the May River area, along with others who visit seasonally.

  • A 23-inch spot-tail bass (aka red drum or redfish) lies exhausted in the lap of a kayaker after a long fight in the shallows of the May River. Fishing remains great in the river, despite increased traffic and hints of pollution. Most local seafood and game fish breed in the May River, although researchers have yet to confirm whether the prized spottails are among them.
