  • A 23-inch spot-tail bass (aka red drum or redfish) lies exhausted in the lap of a kayaker after a long fight in the shallows of the May River. Fishing remains great in the river, despite increased traffic and hints of pollution. • A kayak bow with fishing rod slides through past a line of docks along the May River on a still, fall morning. Stormwater runoff from what used to be isolated wetlands is disrupting the river's delicate balance, prompting shellfish bans and public outcry.

  • A freshly molted egret feather floats on the still surface of the May River. But regardless of whether and where the wind blows, the river's extreme tides - up to 11 feet -ensure undercurrents, much as the extreme changes overrunning its watershed. The feather won't be floating for long.

  • Atlantic bottlenose dolphins strand feed in a marsh creek of the May River, herding fish up on the mud bank, following them, eating them and then rolling back into the water. This learned behavior is unique to the Carolina and Georgia coasts. Scientists say some 500 dolphins are resident in the May River area, along with others who visit seasonally.
